“The Enigma of the Face Mask” aims to tackle a difficult and controversial subject matter: the feelings of inadequacy and insecurity that lead us all to hiding our true selves, wearing an emotional and psychological mask.
I have begun to explore this topic with a first painting, also titled “The Enigma of the Face Mask”. My goal with this painting was to express not only the feeling of imprisonment that we have all felt to a degree in the past year, but also the unsettling feeling of not being able to see nor understand facial expressions, which means we cannot understand what the other person thinks and feels.
This led me to an exploration of the topic in the wider sense to explain the condition of people who have to hide their true selves perhaps every day of their lives in fear of rejection and inadequacy. I have discussed the topic with several people in my community, and found a lot of support.
Ultimately my goal is to dig deeper and use this collection as a tool to show that we must find a way to face and accept our individual differences, and that it’s ok to be exactly who we are without fear or shame. I want to stir up a conversation about seeking reassurance, acceptance, and unconditional love in our society today – so we can finally leave the mask on the table.
